Liberal Hopefuls Agree To Field Single Candidate Before Registration; 문재인-안철수, 단일화 막 올라…"힘 합치겠다"

Both Ahn and Moon, Korea’s presidential hopefuls, seem to know what the majority of Koreans expect from them.  Ahn touched upon the critical issues of abolishing the oligarchy system and providing the broader public with a fair opportunity to proper.  He also said that 2012 would be parallel to 1997 in that it would be another chance to turn things around.  The 1997 financial crisis was a blessing in disguise as pointed out many times, yet the policy makers have screwed the people.  We sincerely hope that this time would be different.  Again, no matter how tough the global economic situation gets, it all boils down to moral choices,

South Korea's two liberal presidential hopefuls on Tuesday announced a much awaited decision to field a unified contender before candidate registration later this month to better challenge their conservative rival, a critical moment in the run-up to the December vote.

Rep. Moon Jae-in of the main opposition Democratic United Party (DUP) and independent candidate Ahn Cheol-soo, a former doctor and software mogul, met in Seoul and reached the agreement to release a joint declaration of political reform measures, officials of their respective election camps told a pack of roughly 600 reporters.

"We had conversations on a wide range of issues, including the people's call for political overhaul and their tough living conditions, and reaffirmed that we share the same consensus," said a joint statement released after the 70-minute closed-door meeting. "We will decide on the unified contender before the candidate registration and will hold consultations on the plan."

안 후보는 "모든 개혁세력이 힘을 모아 같이 맞설 때, 그 때만 정권교체가 가능하고, 또 정권교체 이후에도 원만한 개혁을 이루고 함께하는 정치세력으로 거듭나는, 새 정치를 향한 국민연대의 과정이 있어야 한다"고 비전을 제시했다.

안 후보는 "정치의 근본적 쇄신과 변화가 정권교체의 첫걸음이 될 것"이라며 "기득권 세력의 장벽을 넘어 승리하기 위해서는 우리가 충분히 변화하고 있고, 변화를 실천하고 있다는 믿음을 국민들께 줄 수 있어야 한다"고 강조했다. "지난시기 개혁이 실패한 이유에 대한 분명한 성찰이 있어야 한다. 그때도 개혁 구호는 있었지만 재벌, 검찰공화국, 양극화를 막아내지 못했다"고 참여정부의 개혁 실패에 대한 반성도 촉구했다.

안 후보는 "정치경험도 조직도 세력도 없는 제가 여기까지 온 것 자체가 기적"이라며 "마치 거대한 골리앗과 싸우는 다윗이 된 것 같다. 그리고 마침내 다윗이 이겼듯 큰 변화가 시작됐다"고 말했다

그는 "정치변화를 원하는 국민의 뜻이 '정치에 대한 대중의 환멸'이다, 그렇게 비하하는 분들이 있다"며 "그래서는 안 되죠. 저는 새로운 변화를 원하는 국민 뜻이 시대정신이라고 믿는다"고 말했다. 그는 "국민이 바라는 게 이런 것 같다. 기본을 지키고 정도를 걸어가면 희망이 보이는 나라, 반칙과 특권은 벌 받고 상식과 정의가 살아나는 나라, 그게 다다. 그게 진정으로 (국민이) 바라는 것"이라고 했다.

한편 안 후보는 광주에서 "1997년, 우리 국민이 김대중 전 대통령을 택했던 이유는 바로 변화였다"고 말해 눈길을 끌기도 했다. 그는 "50년 만의 여야 간 정권교체를 바탕으로 낡은 과거의 유산을 딛고 도약할 기회를 가질 수 있었다"며 "제가 벤처를 키워나갈 수 있었던 것도 (김대중) 정부가 IT와 벤처에 관심을 가졌기 때문이다. 우리 모두가 김 전 대통령에게 빚을 지고 있다"고 말했다. 그는 "2012년에는 1997년과 같은 새로운 변화가 다시 재현되기 바란다"고 말해 박수를 받았다.
