From Adweek:
Jumping behind the wheel in Argentina can sometimes be a dangerous experience. Because the country is striped with narrow two-lane roads, cars often pull into oncoming traffic hoping to overtake slower-moving trucks. This risky maneuver contributes to a shocking statistic: In Argentina, traffic accidents kill one person every hour.
Faced with this alarming reality, Samsung and its agency Leo Burnett Argentina set out on a bold mission to curtail the number of traffic-related deaths caused on those dangerous roads. Fusing Samsung’s technology with Leo Burnett’s creative prowess, the duo landed on Samsung trucks as the perfect vehicle, so to speak, for a campaign that had the potential to save lives as it showcased cutting-edge technology.

American Billionaire Takes on Samsung
From Bloomberg:
Paul Elliott Singer could not have picked a bigger fight in South Korea. The American hedge-fund manager said he would oppose a proposed merger within Samsung Group, thereby laying down a challenge to the country’s most powerful company and its richest family.
Predictably, all hell has broken loose. The local press has attacked Singer as a meddling pariah, casting doubt on his motives and advocating more protection for domestic companies. The Korea Economic Daily went as far as calling on regulators to investigate Singer for insider trading or other illegal activities, despite the absence of any evidence.
Yet the support for Samsung is hardly unanimous. Hundreds of minority investors are banding together to back Singer and, perhaps more importantly, the government has stayed neutral. The billionaire is doing more than raising questions about one deal: He’s set off a debate about the privileged position the industrial titans known as chaebol have held in Korea -- and whether they should keep getting special treatment.
“Samsung and South Korea are at a crossroad,” said Kim Sang Jo, executive director at Solidarity for Economic Reform and professor at Hansung University. “If Samsung sticks to its old ways or if South Korea stirs up a nationalistic movement against Elliott, foreign investors’ interest in South Korea will sour.”
The chaebol have held a special place in the country ever since they helped rebuild the economy after the Korean War. They were given explicit government support and protectionist policies as the country modernized and became the fourth-largest economy in Asia. Samsung is as revered in South Korea as Apple Inc. and the founding Lee family is effectively royalty.

@apple vs @samsung and design patents
From Adafruit blog:

Marty Schwimmer and Jordan Garner have penned an article for Law360, http://goo.gl/t7ZLlW, about the recent decision by the Federal Circuit in Apple, Inc. v. Samsung, which clarified the scope of protection available to a design under trade dress and design patent law. The CAFC found that while Apple’s user interface and industrial designs were too utilitarian for trade dress protection, they were sufficiently ornamental to convey design patent protection. According to Marty and Jordan, this case confirms the notion that design patents are cheap, effective IP solutions for companies seeking to protect a competitive edge born out of effective design, but it also cautions that the closer a design gets to representing the optimal user experience, the harder it becomes to separate form from function.

Samsung Announces Their Entry into the Arduino Family
From Makezine:
When you think about Samsung, the first products that come to mind are probably phones or televisions, not Maker-focused electronics. Today, with their announcement at Internet of Things World, Samsung has entered the Maker world with their ARTIK platform, an Arduino compatible family of devices targeted towards Internet of Things applications.
Currently there are three ARTIK devices: The ARTIK 1, ARTIK 5, and ARTIK 10. All are multi-core ARM processors with built in Bluetooth Low Energy. The ARTIK 5 and 10 also include Wi-Fi, BT, Zigbee, and Thread wireless connections.
Combining this powerful hardware with the ease of use and existing knowledge base of the Arduino platform, Samsung hopes to make development of IoT platforms easy to get off the ground:...

Samsung pursuing strategic direction in smart healthcare converging IT and biotechnology
This is not limited to Samsung. Apple and Google are interested in smart healthcare as well. Samsung has been well known for its fast-follower strategy.

BlackBerry Shares Crash Back To Earth After Company Denies Samsung Rumor
From Zero Hedge:
In October, BBRY shares spiked (and dumped) on rumors that Lenovo had made an offer. Today, after a detailed report from Reuters explained that Samsung executives had offered to takeover the troubled phone-maker (or whatever they call themselves nowadays) and the stocks spiked up nearly 40% - perfectly running stopw through the mid-Nov highs and squeezing shorts out of the market... and now - after hours - BlackBerry issues a statement denying the whole thing... rigged much?

Samsung Electronics Q3 net down 49 pct
Samsung seems to know that the era of IT has peaked. That's why they got interested in biotech in the first place as a next growth engine.
From Yonhap:
Samsung Electronics Co., the world's top smartphone maker, said Thursday its net profit fell 48.7 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier, as its faltering smartphone business dragged down overall sales.
Operating profit plunged 60 percent on-year to 4.1 trillion won, from a record high of 10.1 trillion won in the same quarter of 2013.
The operating profit marks the lowest in three years, since Samsung logged 3.75 trillion won in the second quarter of 2011.
It is also the first time in three years that the company saw operating profit decline for two consecutive quarters.

Willl Samsung's bet on biotech drugs succeed?. Samsung's new leader, Lee Jae-yong is leading this project. Samsung's bet on semiconductor was successful partly because Samsung took advantage of global technology and production cycles. Some have raised a concern that the semiconductor business which his father, Samsung's chairman took on is quite different from the pharmaceutical industry, more high value-added. The IT industry may have peaked. And yet, the pharmaceutical business demands a deep scientific knowledge and discipline, as pointed out. Although it's rare to find any successful case for corporations to transition from IT to biotech drugs, Lee Jae-yong may well prove he's right on his huge bet. We shall see.
I'm also hoping that Samsung would be more mindful of the purpose of a corporation under the new leadership. It can't be measured by making profits alone.

Why Samsung Is Launching into the Health Sector; China' s Technological Prowess Fast Growing
There are several reasons behind Samsung's entry into the health sector such as biotech drugs, medical instruments and the healthcare platform. China's rapid rise in the IT sector described in the article below is one factor. Samsung may need to go beyond the IT industry.
Samsung' strategic bet in the IT industry has proven to be effective. While some have raised a concern for Samsung's move into the health sector due to a challenging nature of the business requiring a deep scientific knowledge and discipline., Samsung has been a fast learner starting from scratch in the high-tech sector. Lee, Jae-yong, a new leader of Samsung, who was educated in Korea, Japan and the U.S., may well prove to have the foresighted strategic talent.
Quite a few Korean SMEs seem to lack key strategic decision making skill. Besides all those structural issues which have hampered SMEs' growth, they may have to develop the solid strategic competence for their benefit.

In Healthcare, Apple Will Struggle To Match Huge Samsung Ambitions; Or The Other Way Around?
Samsung is betting on healthcare from biotech drugs, medical instruments to a healthcare platform under the new leadership. The Korean media outlets have reported Samsung's leadership change and aggression in the health sector.
Samsung has been the ultimate fast follower. This strategy has worked out beautifully for Samsung. Samsung doesn't have much experience in healthcare and an integrated platform approach to meet the end users' needs.
After all, Apple’s branding power is superb. It was a latecomer in mobile phones. And yet, Samsung ended up following Apple’s lead. Apple is really good at reflecting what customers need in product design. Samsung can learn a lot from Apple. Whereas Samsung has the technology, materials and production processes, Apple has set the long-term strategic direction and built the platform encompassing iPhone, iPad, and iCloud, in an integrated fashion accordingly. So far, Apple’s approach makes more sense to me.
Why a sudden interest in healthcare by major electronics firms? Because they know the electronics industry has reached saturation? They simply see a new business opportunity in healthcare? Most of all, they seem to know the fragile nature of the global economy.
Lee Jae-yong seems to understand what it takes to compete in the new businesses. The talents and culture Samsung needs seems to be quite different from those in the hardware business in which Samsung has been. Hence, Lee Jae-yong is trying to change a rigid corporate culture, for example.
Further, Samsung may have to keep in mind that there are ample business opportunities given the global economic conditions and competitive environments. For instance, the open-source approach has a lot to offer.
From Forbes:
Samsung is well entrenched in health.
amsung will be a worthy competitor with its health-oriented devices and services. But the endgame in health is integration. Who will control the relationship between patient and health care provider, who will control the data?
Meanwhile Samsung has chosen a variety of routes into health.
Just prior to Apple’s announcement Samsung announced SAMI – “the Samsung Architecture for Multimodal Interactions, a cloud-based open software platform capable of bringing together diverse data from a variety of sources for analysis.”
While SAMI might be a strategy for how to take data from a variety of wearable devices and integrate them in a dashboard, Samsung’s real ambition is “to become a global leader as a healthcare company through joining together its display, semiconductor, and mobile businesses”.
Through Samsung Medison and its core electronics business, Samsung has a growing business in medical imaging and diagnostics (for example in Ultrasound technology and X-Ray), medical Cloud, and in mobile patient records access within hospitals.

Samsung SDI merges with Cheil Industries:
Samsung seems to know what they are doing given the current global business environments. And yet, Samsung's move may not be necessarily good for the Korean SMEs. Korea needs to strengthen solid support industries and companies.
We are hoping to eventually become a company like Samsung, encompassing basic core technology, end products and new materials to remain competitive on a global stage. I need your prayers and support.
From the Korea Herald:
Samsung SDI, a display panel and battery maker of Samsung Group, said Monday that it would be merging with Cheil Industries.
The merger, which will make Samsung SDI the surviving entity, comes as the group seeks to create a total materials and energy solutions company.
Cheil Industries, which began as a textile maker, will dissolve 60 years after it began operations.
Samsung SDI said in a statement that it expected the new company to achieve annual sales of 10 trillion won ($9.4 billion), and that it sought to increase sales to over 29 trillion won by 2020 by generating synergy between SDI’s lithium-ion batteries and Cheil’s materials.

Samsung's Galaxy S5 Not Medical Device: Health Agency
From Yonhap:
Samsung Electronics Co.'s newest smartphone Galaxy S5 will not be categorized as a healthcare instrument despite having a heart rate sensor, the medical ministry said Monday, freeing it from regulations that could have complicated its sales launch.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said it plans to revise the current law to distinguish heart rate sensors used for leisure purposes from those serving medical purposes.
"Although the Galaxy S5 is technically a medical device under the current law, it will be excluded from the category after the revision," an official from the ministry said. "It will take about 25 days for the amendment."
The ministry added major countries such as the United States, Japan and Britain already follow similar categorization.
Samsung's Galaxy S5 smartphone is the first in the industry to come with a built-in heart rate sensor, which can also be connected to smartwatches to monitor one's heart rate such as during exercise.
The feature had sparked concerns over the release schedule of the Galaxy S5, as local law stipulates that medical devices, defined as equipment used to diagnose, treat or prevent diseases, must be approved by the ministry before being sold in the market.

Google and Samsung Sign GlobalPpatent Deal
Samsung seems to know what's behind Google.
From BBC:
The deal will cover "a broad range of technologies and business areas" and apply to both existing patents and any filed over the next decade.
Both companies already work together closely, with Samsung using Google's Android mobile operating system.
The move is also expected to strengthen their position against rivals such as Apple, which has filed multiple lawsuits worth billions of dollars for alleged patent infringements.

Samsung's Q4 Profit Sags amid Smartphone Woes
Samsung
seems to know what’s ahead for the global markets, thereby investing
accordingly. They should be O.K.
From Yonhap:
the world's top maker of smartphones, reported a weak fourth-quarter bottom line Friday with its quarterly profit dipping for the first time in more than two years amid concerns over a slowdown in smartphone sales.
Samsung Electronics attributed the yearly improvement to higher sales in memory chips and organic light-emitting diode panels, which boasted robust performance amid the prolonged economic slump.
The company said it has also maintained more than a 30 percent market share in major markets, with the number of tablet PC sales growing twofold in 2013 from the previous year.
The tech giant also held market dominance via cutting-edge devices such as the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which features a 1.63-inch screen and a 1.9 megapixel camera on the strap, and connects to Samsung's Galaxy smartphones and other gadgets via Bluetooth technology.

Samsung Plans Aggressive Investments in 2014
Samsung is a well-known IT giant. It is making an aggressive move in healthcare areas like pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
From Yonhap:
Samsung Group, South Korea's top conglomerate, is expected to make aggressive investments in its mainstay businesses this year, industry sources said Sunday, with their focus on whether its annual investment will top 50 trillion won (US$47.4 billion).
The group has steadily increased its annual investment in facilities and research and development to some 49 trillion won last year from 42 trillion won in 2011.
According to the sources, Samsung Electronics Co, the world's largest smartphone maker, and Samsung Everland Inc., the de facto holding company of the group, will each spend 84.7 billion won to buy new shares issued by Samsung Biologics Co. next month.
Late last month, Samsung Electronics and Samsung Everland said they will invest a total of 600 billion won in the group's biopharmaceutical manufacturing unit by August.
Samsung Biologics was established in April 2011 as part of Samsung's plan to seek a new growth engine by diversifying its businesses outside its mainstay consumer electronics and mobile devices.
Half of the total investment will be spent on the second plant of Samsung Biologics, currently under construction. The second plant, to be equipped with 10 bioreactors with 15,000-liter working volumes, is scheduled to be completed by 2015. The company's first plant has two bioreactors with volumes of 15,000 liters.
A bioreactor is a device or system that supports a biologically active environment and are used to grow cells.
"We have expedited the groundbreaking date for the second plant from the initial 2015 as market demand for biologics has been growing at a faster pace," said an official at Samsung Biologics.
Last year, Samsung Biologics signed deals with Basel-based Swiss Loch Group and Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) of the U.S.

Samsung, LG In Row Over Eye-Tracking Technology
From Yonhap:
South Korean manufacturers Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. are in a patent row over technology that enables users to control their smartphones with their eyes, upping the ante between them as they both plan to release flagship devices next month, market watchers said Tuesday.
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics both incorporated eye-tracking technology in their latest flagship smartphones -- the Galaxy S4 and the Optimus G Pro -- which are set for release in April.
The feature, which Samsung Electronics calls "smart pause" and LG Electronics calls "smart video," pauses a video when a user looks away then resumes it when the user turns back to the device.
Both companies have been promoting the eye-tracking technology as one of the key user experience features of their latest flagship smartphones.
While the eye recognition technology was touted as one of the key features of the Galaxy S4 and was announced through product teasers, LG Electronics claims it already applied for the technology patent in August 2009.
